Probably worth reading Derek’s entire post at putthison b/c he is a thoughtful and rigorous dude, and it helps that he’s not full-time bloglife (although, I guess, really, who is?). I agree with his general premise that audiences can’t just trust traditional media outlets anymore to have the best and brightest, and that you can find richer conversation on blogs and other platforms. That’s true for pretty much any interest, although the topic at hand is I guess menswear.
There are two things that drive the visibility of these outlets, though, and one is less appealing to me than the other. The first is quality original content. Solid, original writing is out there, and new perspectives you won’t find in magazines that have been overwhelmed by advertorial. The other, though, is relentless, sometimes shameless self-promotion. The best sources out there—Put This On and A Continuous Lean among them—don’t need to force posts up at a ridiculous rate that dilutes their work, or remind everyone on twitter, tumblr, fb, etc. that they’ve posted something new. And then remind them again. And again.
